Is Google really using Latent Semantic Indexing?

What is Latent Semantic Indexing? Is Google really using this type of technology?

Yes. Google is using LSI to determine the appropriate adsense ads to place on theme related pages. For example, if you have a website page that is about "jaguars" how does Google know to place adsense ads about "luxury cars" instead of "amazon rainforest cruise"?Here is an excellent tool to view Google's early Latent Semantic Indexing technology at work. While some results will depend on the broad keywords chosen by adwords advertisers who are unaware of synonyms within their market- you will usually find completely different markets with the addition of a single word.

For example, using the tool above, type in "apple pie".

What will be retrieved by Google adsense LSI is adwords advertisements about "apple pie recipes".

Now type in the word "apple".

You will see that Apple Computers and Laptop ads dominate the adsense sandbox.

The above experiment reveals the very basic concept behind latent semantic indexing. With the addition of a single word- in this case "pie", Google is able to easily distinguish the luxury food market from the computer market!

Now multiply this sort of Google programming "magic" by a thousand and carry it over to the natural search engine algorithms. Then imagine that you have just dumped THOUSANDS of keywords into an automatic page generation software. You have retrieved these keywords from various keyword tools like wordtracker, keyworddiscovery, or keyword elite and the KEI is very high.

Which keywords in your massive list are most important for you to include in your specific content?

If you answered "keywords with high KEI" you are usually wrong!
