What better way to see out the old and welcome in the new, then to wrap up my three part article on Google Trends and spend a moment talking about our next release, TZX.
Google Trends OR” Function Averaging Effect
In part II of my article on Google Trends, I introduced the “or” operator. In my example, I showed “motel or motels” queries stacked up against different forms of B&B to see which one was a better term to advertise.
Now I need to show you the down side of the “or” operator. In the graph below, I compare “motel or motels” against the individual terms “motel” and “motels”. You’ll see that adding the yellow and the red line together visually does not equal the blue line in many places. There is an averaging or a smoothing that seems to occur in these graphs. Check out, for instance the last quarter of 2004 in this picture.

Excluding keywords using the minus sign operator
The example below shows you how to exclude a queries that contain a specific word. Let’s say that I’m interested in baby bears, but not in the Chicago football team. I could issue the query “cubs –chicago” or “cubs –football”. I show the results below where I compare the number of queries for just cubs and cubs without the term “chicago”. It’s obvious to me, however, because of the demographic locations for Illinois still being among the highest for both queries, I’m still not looking at people interested in baby bears ;)

The last thing that I’ll mention is that you can change the time frame on the data that you are viewing – if you select a particular year, you’ll get months as the unit of measure along the bottom, and if you select a particular month, the units of measure become days. Also the news items will be reworked for those periods of time and you’ll be able to see how much impact news has on your particular topic at the finer grades of time.
And that finishes our report on Google Trends. 
I’m quite happy to announce that our next version of ThemeZoom, due out late January or early February, 2008, will include Google Trends! This will to allow you to visually compare selected themes in the new VMAD clusters. You will be able to see, within a single graph, the main keywords for each of your themes held up against each other. You will have the flexibility to be able to control the time and locations so that you can get a complete picture of how these themes trend over time.
This, along with the new visual vmad/competitive analysis displays, will allow you to make quicker better decisions when defining the main themes of your website.

Here the vertical market is displayed from top to bottom, with the upper end of the vertical market themes at the top, the parent theme front and center along with comparable themes, and the subordinate themes below that. This gives you at a glance the layout of the most important keywords associated with your parent theme.
You can see a part of the data table under the graphic, with the parent theme highlighted in blue and the theme-defining synonyms in yellow.
Also… article and keyword selection for this release will all be automated, making this release not only user friendly (and visually appealing) but also removing all the confusing and particularly annoying tasks associated with building your website blueprint. And isn’t that really what automation is all about?
There is so much more I could talk about – there are sooooo many cool things coming within the next couple of months. But I think I’ve said enough… In fact, I may have said too much.
Shhhhhh… don’t tell Russell I spilled the beans ;)
