…Relationships

The very fibers that connect the web together are relationships. The relationship is why this person is connected to that person – a relationship is why this web page is linked to that web page – literally the way that you transverse from one thing to the next on the internet is because of a relationship. And it’s the relationship between two things that give each of those things more meaning by providing a CONTEXT.

I want to pick up from my last post where I talked about Google having bought Metaweb last week.  In the fascinating videos below you’ll see explanations about the where and why of web 3.0.  The first one, a video by Kate Ray, discusses, among other things, the pros and cons of trying to create a system based on ontologies.  Both videos combine to give a great overview of where we are now and where we NEED to go in order to make sense of the billions upon billions of pages on the web.

Tim Berners-Lee, in the second video, describes how badly DATA… simple, raw data is needed.  This data will help us define the objects (entities) and the relationships between objects on the web.  It helps to fill in gaps in our current understanding of the world, and perhaps most importantly, it helps to give us a context of how to understand all those billions of pieces of information already on the web.

When I heard the word “context” in the video, I paused the video, jumped up and wrote that word on my white board, right beside the symbol for the keyword DNA braid.

This is probably the best way I have found to describe what a keyword DNA braid and a silo structure does.  It provides CONTEXT.  The linking structure, the themes that support the silos, the keywords that support the themes, they are all providing a context for your website, so that when Google spiders them the bots UNDERSTAND what your website is about and can rank it appropriately.
